Class description
A 2 day teapot making workshop. Attendees should be comfortable throwing or hand-building a 1kg cylinder and modifying it. Number of participants: wheels = 7, hand-builders = 4 Tea and coffee provided participants bring own lunch Clay and firings will be paid by participants Workshop Outline Day 1 Before lunch: what is involved in making a teapot, parts, specific points of interest like the vent hole, stopping drips, how to stop lid falling off while pouring and preventing overflow. Fiona will demonstrate body shapes including a gallery for the lid. Attendees will throw two or three bodies and choose which to make into teapots. Hand-builders will make one or more bodies depending on method and speed. Fiona will talk about exhibition teapots. Teapot lids and galleries for the lids will be made together to ensure they fit. After lunch: morning teapot bodies will be prepped for trimming the following day. Fiona will demonstrate different spout styles, then attendees will throw at least 3 spouts per teapot body. Hand-builders will make about 2 spouts per body. Depending on speed, hand-builders may make and attach handles. Day 2 Before lunch: attendees will pull, roll or sculpt a 2-3 handles per teapot body. Leather-hard teapot bodies will be turned. Lids will have holes added. Hand-builders can perfect their teapots, ensuring all seams are adequately sealed and finished. Depending on speed, they may create matching cups with saucers. After lunch: Spouts will be trimmed by hand, and pouring holes added to the body. Spouts and handdles will be attached. Embellishments can be added if there is time.
